Every dieter's dream dessert? 'Raindrop cake' contains zero calories and looks like it's made of water

raindrop cake which looks like a giant droplet of water has been invented - and it contains precisely no calories.
Inspired by traditional Mizu Shingen Mochi from Japan, the light, delicate treat has been recreated for an American audience.

The deceptive dessert was unveiled by Darren Wong after he worked out how to formulate the make-up of the unusual dish himself.
Made of mineral water and agar - a gelatin-like substance made from algae - it can be sliced, and reportedly has a mild taste like water.
Its construction, says Darren "took a lot of trial and error testing out different agars and gelatins to get the right consistency".

He explains: "The cake has to maintain its shapebut still have the texture of water. This makes the cake a nightmare to store and transport.

"That was the second challenge I had to overcome. Each cake has to be individually packed in a way that protects it from movement and temperature."

The dish, which can be topped with roasted soybean flour and brown sugar syrup for flavour, is being unveiled at Smorgasburg , a food festival which runs in New York on spring and summer weekends.

If it looks familiar to you, Darren says: "It kind reminds me of that scene from A Bug’s Life where they drink water drops off of leaves."
